Features

The aim of the department is to cultivate students to be modern engineers with profession of civil engineering and capability of information technology. In undergraduate programs, the division of engineering infrastructure focuses upon traditional knowledge and the latest technology of civil engineering; the division of construction business pays attention to engineering management along with information technology capabilities. Especially, the department designs and develops the program courses to foster the students to satisfy the demands of profession in engineering and then make successful career.

One of the program features is the series courses related to construction automation and information technology (IT), including computer programming, computer graphics, numerical analysis methods and with professional computer system design, computer-aided design for structural engineering and geotechnical engineering, computerization in construction management, and the application of artificial intelligence in civil engineering, etc. Among all the civil engineering departments in the universities and institutes of technology in Taiwan, the department provides the most complete and integrated IT courses in the curriculum of civil engineering.

In addition to IT course activities, the Department provides students with courses of innovation management, entrepreneurship, and engineering laws to be integrated with the traditional engineering knowledge for multi-professions development in academia and industry. To inspire students to interdisciplinary learning, the Department also collaborates with other departments in the College of Engineering or other colleges, containing the Department of Architecture, the Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, and the Department of Transportation Management, to launch courses of knowledge and technology integration.

Other than course study, students have opportunities to join the research activities in the affiliated Wind Engineering Research Center (WERC), which has long tradition of academic reputation as a pioneer in wind engineering research. There wind tunnels are installed in WERC for investigating the wind load effects of modern civil engineering products, such as high-rise buildings, long-span bridges, and high-speed railway systems. Besides, the atmospheric diffusion of wind research is also involved. With consistent development and collaboration with internationally famous scholars, the WERC keeps making dominant contribution in this research field and correlated industry.

In 2007, the Common Wealth Magazine (english.cw.com.tw) reported the ranking of graduate schools with the most distinctive research achievements in Taiwan. The Division of Structure Engineering in the Department was highly ranked, and the only private university in the reported ranking of Civil Engineering category. In summary, the Department of Civil Engineering at Tamkang University holds a superior position in engineering education and numerous outstanding Alumni in Taiwan and overseas as well. We expect the students of the Department to successfully make the environment more sustainable and the engineering more effective in the near future.
